# Revision Browser

> Browse the complete file tree of any commit without checking it out, then preview or compare individual paths.

Revision Browser lets you inspect a repository exactly as it existed at an earlier commit without changing the current branch or working tree. It opens in a separate, read-only window, so you can explore old source, assets, and folders while keeping your current work in place.

## Open a revision

1. Open **History** and select one commit.
2. Control-click the commit and choose **Show Repository at Revision**.
3. Expand folders in the left pane and select a file to preview it.

The header shows the resolved commit SHA and subject. Paths changed by that commit are highlighted in the tree, while the rest of the snapshot remains available for context.

  Use **Copy Commit SHA**, **Copy Path**, or **Copy Object ID** when you need an
  exact value for a review, issue, or terminal command.

## Preview historical files

Commit+ reads file content directly from Git objects. It does not create a temporary checkout.

* Text files use the same syntax-aware preview as History.
* Supported image files open in the image preview.
* Symbolic links show their recorded target.
* Empty files and metadata-only entries are identified explicitly.
* Very large text, long lines, and objects over the 2 MB preview limit show a safe summary instead of loading an unbounded preview.

## Preview Git LFS content

When a revision contains a Git LFS pointer, Commit+ shows the object's size and SHA-256 identifier. If the object is already in the local LFS cache, the browser previews its real content. Otherwise, choose a remote and download that one historical object from the preview.

The repository snapshot stays read-only: downloading supplies preview content but does not check out the revision or replace the file in your working tree.

## Compare a file or folder

Control-click an entry, or use **Compare with Revision…** in the detail pane. The comparison window starts with the selected snapshot on the right and `HEAD` on the left. Enter another commit, branch, or tag to change the left side.

* A file comparison opens its diff immediately.
* A folder comparison lists every changed path below that folder, then lets you inspect each diff.
* Binary changes are identified even when a text diff is unavailable.

This is useful when you know *where* a change happened but do not want to check out branches just to inspect it.
